Week 2

THE GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD

hi!i hope you had a great weekend:) 馃挆
Last week i learned about the "Direct Method." This teaching approach champions a more organic learning experience, prioritizing oral interaction, spontaneous language use, and minimal focus on grammar rules. It's all about communication and practical application,

馃挆We explored two fundamental language teaching methods: the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) and the Direct Method (DM). These approaches play crucial roles in our development. While GTM focuses on reading and writing, DM emphasizes communication and natural language use. Despite their differences, both methods contribute to our intellectual growth.making it a refreshing departure from traditional methods.
i will explain it the way i understood:
  1. Grammar is Key: You focus a lot on learning grammar rules.

  2. Translation is Big: You do a lot of translating between the target language and your native language.

  3. Memorize, Memorize: You learn vocabulary by memorizing lists of words.

  4. Reading Rules: Reading is the main skill you work on, usually with classic texts.

  5. Speaking and Listening? Not So Much: There's not a lot of focus on speaking and listening. It's more about understanding what you read.

  6. Teacher's in Charge: The teacher does most of the talking and explaining.

  7. Mistakes are Fixed: Teachers correct your mistakes right away to make sure you get things right.

It's an old-fashioned way of learning languages that's not as popular today because it doesn't focus much on actually using the language in real-life situations.
